Maintaining Focus

Maintaining Focus

The past year was pretty hectic. Vying for attention were my job, school, developing this site, and other important things. I felt pulled in all these directions at the same time. It was hard to find time to do much of anything! However, through it all one thought came to the forefront and and I want to make itmy primary goal. That thought is to maintain my focus on Christ.

Focusing on Christ

More often than not I came to the end of a day only to feel a bit dissatisfied with the fruits of my labor. I saw a lot of areas in my life that were good, or good enough, but that doesn’t seem to cut it for me any longer. I don’t want to settle for something that’s just good; I want to aspire to excellence. While many of the things I’ve accomplished were good, I’m not sure they were excellent.

I have grown dissatisfied with just ‘doing good.’ Yet in day-to-day life there are a myriad of choices to choose from! Which path do I take today? Which choice is the excellent choice? What do I do with the information I have available to me? The answer to all these questions is the same. It is to reorient my focus – daily – on the One Who will guarantee my success at choosing the excellent path that I should take.

A Point of Focus

John 15:5-6
I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. (NKJV)

It’s not that we can’t do anything without Him, it’s that anything done without Him will amount to nothing. Jesus was effective at what He did because He sought direction from the Father before He did anything. If that was a priority for Him, then it should be a priority for me. By doing so I’ll get direction in how to choose between doing something good versus something excellent.

Jesus demonstrated the need for maintaining focus. He sought the Father at all times! If that was a priority for Him then I should make it a daily point to refocus on Him. In so doing I will get direction in how to choose between doing something that is good versus doing something that is excellent.
