Searching For A Super Hero

Searching For A Super Hero

Some of the most successful movies of all time share a common thread. They are usually focused around a character (or characters) which have superhuman traits and abilities, coming to the rescue of those who are powerless to stop the bad guy/s. The best examples come from Marvel Studios. Not only have they produced the series of films mentioned earlier, but they’ve also put out powerhouses like Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man and many more. Why are these movies so successful? It’s because people are searching for a Super Hero.

The people who go to see movies like these are treated to great special effects, good story lines and really, really terrible bad guys. Just when things look the bleakest and all hope seems lost, the heroes come in and save the day. Whew! And if that wasn’t good enough we know that there will be another equally good offering coming out sometime in the future. We look forward to the next installment – the dreaded ‘sequel.’ It’s OK though, because we want to see it! We love to see good triumphing over evil because deep down inside we are all searching for a super hero to save us.

We appreciate heroes like the ones in these films. They are sometimes like us; faulty, quirky or perhaps imperfect. Yet for all that, when they ‘have their game on’ they are invincible despite the odds being stacked so far against their victory. We empathize with them because we want them to win. We are searching for a super hero, and they step right in to take up the mantle we want to give them!

While Hollywood has done a great job of providing these cinematic heroes for countless millions of movie-goers, there is something better available for us. The inward desire for all people is to search for a super hero. We are lost, and unable to help ourselves. We are doomed if someone doesn’t come to our rescue! What do we need a super hero for?

To save us from hostile aliens? No.

To right a catastrophic and planet-ending wrong somewhere in the universe? No.

We need to be rescued from ourselves. We are desperately wrong, and need to be made right. We can’t do it ourselves, and so we go on searching for a super hero to fix our most basic problem – ourselves.

Enter Jesus, the real Super Hero. He has done for us what we could never do for ourselves. By dying on the cross and rising from the dead, He has given us the opportunity to enter into a life we could never imagine. Peace instead of turmoil. Honesty instead of lies. Faithfulness instead of infidelity. Right instead of wrong. He has saved the day!

The only thing we need to do is answer the call of the Spirit of God. Jesus has done the work for us, and calls to each of us to enter into the rest only He can provide.

Are you searching for a super Hero? Look no further – it’s JESUS.

A son and servant of the King.
